Findings from the National Survey of Women Veterans

by Laura Herrera, MD, MPH ; Donna Washington, MD, MPH
Seminar date: 1/12/2011

Description: The National Survey of Women Veterans (NSWV) was a nationwide telephone survey conducted in 2008-09 in a population-based sample of women veterans that included both VA users and VA nonusers, and all military eras of women veterans. Its objectives were to: (1) characterize the demographics, health care needs, and VA experience of women veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces; (2) determine how health care needs and barriers to VA health care use differ among women veterans of different periods of military service; and (3) assess women veterans preference for potential actions to address VA barriers and health care needs identified in regional studies. We will describe key findings from the NSWV in the areas of women veterans' demographics, military service experience, health status and personal health behaviors, health care use, knowledge and perceptions of VA health care, and barriers to VA health care use.
