ESP Report: Homelessness Among Veterans

by Howard Balshem, MS ; Vivian Christensen, PhD ; Devan Kansagara, MD, MCR ; Stephen Metraux, PhD ; Thomas O'Toole, MD ; Anais Tuepker, PhD, MPH
Seminar date: 5/23/2011

Description: Investigators at the VA Evidence-based Synthesis Program in Portland, Oregon conducted a review of the literature to further our understanding of the epidemiology of homelessness among Veterans. The seminar will focus on the literature on individual characteristics associated with homelessness, but will also include a brief discussion of some of the structural factors, such as lack of affordable housing, cuts in income assistance programs, and labor market changes, associated with homelessness. While there is consistent evidence associating specific risk factors such as substance abuse and mental illness with homelessness, study limitations of existing research have been significant and their implications will be discussed, along with suggestions for future research.
