Developing a PACT-Delivered Integrated Treatment for Veterans with Cardiovascular Conditions and Smoking or Risky Drinking

Description: This presentation will describe the results to date of Dr. Gass’s HSR&D CDA-2, mentored by Drs. Jennifer Funderburk, Steve Maisto, & David Edelman, which has focused on using mixed methods to develop an integrated, team-delivered treatment for Veterans who have not responded to standard primary care treatments for drinking and smoking who have a cardiovascular condition. Dr. Gass and her team have so far used qualitative interviews with national providers and experts to refine the intervention, called CARE-PACT, and have piloted CARE-PACT in an open trial with plans to complete a pilot RCT. The intervention and its initial results and future directions will be discussed. Intended Audience: Anyone with an interest in VA PACT teams, comorbidities team-based care, and motivational/educational treatments for smoking and risky drinking.
