Introducing the Implementation Planning Assessment Tool: A Tool to Help Implement or Scale-Up and Spread Effective Interventions

by Lori Davis, MD ; Christine Kowalski, MPH ; Tassos Kyriakides, PhD ; Whitney Mills, PhD
Seminar date: 1/17/2023

Description: The Implementation Planning Assessment Tool provides a list of necessary steps for trialists and researchers aiming to improve implementation, including scale-up and spread, of effective, clinical-trial-tested interventions in healthcare settings. Clinicians and researchers who are new to implementation science may also benefit from the tool. We will showcase how the tool was developed using principles from implementation science, a retrospective application of the tool in a completed clinical trial showing missed opportunities, and a prospective application of the tool in a new clinical trial. We will also provide future directions and expansion of the tool’s use outside of VA. Recommended reading: Kowalski CP, Kawentel LM, Kyriakides TC, Davis L, Bowersox NW, Kilbourne AM, Huang GD, and Nevedal AL. (2022). Facilitating Future Implementation and Translation to Clinical Practice: The Implementation Planning Assessment Tool for Clinical Trials. Journal of Clinical and Translational Science, 1-61. doi:10.1017/cts.2022.467 Intended Audience: researchers, clinicians, practitioners, or anyone new to implementation science
