Normalization Process Theory (NPT) and NPT Coding Manual for use in Implementation, Evaluation Research, and Qualitative Work
Carl May, PhD
Seminar date: 4/6/2023
Description: The analysis and interpretation of qualitative data can make an important contribution to research on implementation processes and their outcomes when such data are interpreted through the lens of implementation theory. Normalization Process Theory (NPT) is widely used to design complex interventions and to understand the dynamics of implementation processes and their outcomes. The NPT can be used as a framework for implementation and evaluation research and is frequently used to inform qualitative research that aims to explain and evaluate processes that shape late-stage translation of innovations in the organization and delivery of healthcare. Dr. May will provide an introduction to the NPT and simplify the theory for the user. He will also present a coding manual for qualitative researchers using NPT that can facilitate transparent data analysis processes and will also reduce the cognitive and practical burden on researchers.
