Measuring Veterans Health Services Use in VA and Medicare

Description: This program provides an overview of current approaches to and issues in assessing Veterans’ use of services provided by home healthcare agencies, skilled nursing facilities, and hospice services, and on durable medical equipment and supplies using VA and Medicare claims data. In addition, methods used to ascertain Veterans’ health services use will be presented. Finally, caveats about VA and Medicare data and areas of current research are discussed.
At the conclusion of the program participants should be able to:
1) Identify current approaches to assessing Veterans’ health services use in VA and Medicare claims data;
2) Describe measurement strategies for evaluating VA and Medicare health care use; and
3) Describe limitations of using VA and Medicare claims data to assess health services use.
