VIReC Database and Methods Seminar

Blood pressure measurements and their application for outcomes research in the CDW

by Csaba Kovesdy, M.D.
Seminar date: 4/6/2015

Description: Blood pressure measurements are obtained routinely on virtually all veterans receiving clinical care in the VA. Hypertension remains the number one risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality worldwide. The large number of blood pressure measurements recorded in the VA research database offer a unique opportunity to examine the incidence and prevalence of hypertension, secular trends in blood pressure control and hypertension treatment, and outcomes associated with blood pressure level and various antihypertensive therapies in US veterans. Objectives: 1. Review the blood pressure measurement variable in the VA database: location, file structure, ancillary variables, and availability. 2. Examine practical aspects of analyzing blood pressure in the VA database 3. Discuss studies examining blood pressure in the VA database
