Conrad KJ, Mahableshwarkar A, Lutz G. Money Management for Mental Illness: The Missing Leg on the Table of Community Care. Federal Practitioner. 2003 Sep 1; 20(9): 32-54.
As theory develops on the needs of persons with severe mental illness, it is becoming clear that there are four legs on the table of successful community living. These have been called the 4 L's: liver, lover, legal and livelihood, referring to the problems of substance abuse, lack of social support, run-ins with law enforcement, and lack of financial support. This study focuses on the last and most neglected of these, finances, since, without money management, some pyschiatric patients may misuse or waste their money due to factors such as delusions, lack of skills, impulsive behavior, and susceptibility to victimization.
