Abstract: Hospital systems frequently implement quality measures to quantify healthcare processes and patient outcomes. One such measure that has previously been used is the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) quality measure of perioperative beta blocker continuation, SCIP-Card-2. The SCIP-Card-2 measure requires resource-intensive medical chart abstraction, limiting its application to a small sample of eligible patients. This paper describes a natural language processing (NLP) system for automatic extraction of SCIP-Card-2 quality measures in clinical text notes.
