• MNT 03-215 – Expanding and Testing VA Collaborative Care Models for Depression

Objectives: Facilitating the rapid uptake of research findings into clinical practice and policy is a challenging undertaking, particularly when this involves implementation of a relatively complex evidence-based program such as collaborative care for depression. In a large health care system such as the VA, more information is needed about barriers and facilitators to system-wide implementation of evidence-based practices and programs. The purpose of this workshop is to: a) describe Mental Health QUERI’s efforts to implement collaborative care for depression, including progression from initial implementation studies to regional rollout (the “ReTIDES” project) in the context of the QUERI steps; b) describe formation of linkages between the research team and relevant VHA entities to facilitate implementation, overcome barriers, and prepare for national dissemination; c) present results of qualitative interviews with VHA leaders and other key stakeholders concerning implementation of evidence-based practices; and d) discuss promises and pitfalls in the development of partnerships between QUERI groups and VHA leaders and other stakeholders. Activities: Drs. Rubenstein and Chaney will give a brief overview of the evolution of the TIDES project from initial VA studies to the regional rollout stage (ReTIDES). Then, Mr. Smith will describe linkages formed between researchers and important VHA entities, including Office of Patient Care Services, Office of Mental Health Services, Office of Quality and Performance, and the Employee Education Service. Dr. Owen will present findings from qualitative interviews of VHA leaders and other key stakeholders, detailing barriers and facilitators to building partnerships of researchers, clinical managers, and policymakers. Dr. Katz, the Deputy Chief Patient Care Services Officer for Mental Health, and Dr. Petzel, Director of VISN 23, will each make brief presentations concerning their perspectives on the development of partnerships between QUERI groups and leaders at the Central Office and VISN levels that could facilitate national implementation of evidence-based practices, using collaborative care for depression as an example. Discussion and questions from the audience will follow.
