Carney P, Jones E. A Controlled Study of Medical Comorbidity In Women and men with Schizophrenia and Schizoaffective Disorder. Journal of general internal medicine. 2006 Nov 1; 21(11):A-10-A-10.
Persons with schizophrenia are at increased risk of mortality when compared with persons without this chronic mental condition. We compared insured persons with and without schizophrenia in order to better understand if differences in the prevalence of medical conditions existed between the 2 groups. Using data filed by health professionals for insurance claims, we noted that persons with schizophrenia were more likely to have multiple chronic medical conditions. Conditions including emphysema, hepatitis C, liver disease, and diabetes were more likely to be found in persons with schizophrenia than those without. Our results suggest a high burden of medical comorbidity in schizophrenia.
