Schmid AS, Duncan PW, Studenski SA, Richards L, Lai SM, Reker DM, Perera S, Wu SS. Defining Clinically Meaningful changes in gait speed in a post-stroke therapeutic exercise study at 3 months. Paper presented at: Evidence-Based Rehabilitation Joint Annual Conference; 2004 Sep 11; Ponte Vedra, FL.
OBJECTIVE: to determine if a post-stroke exercise intervention produced clinically meaningful changes in gait velocity at 3 months DESIGN: secondary analysis of data from RCTPARTICIPANTS: 64 persons post-stroke, living in the community and walking > 0.8 m/sRESULTS: the proportion of individuals who demonstrated clinically significant changes in gait velocity was higher for the intervention group than for controls. Among all those who had clinically significant changes in gait speed, they had higher self-reported QoL(ADLs/IDLs, mobility, participation, and physical functioning). CONCLUSIONS: this rehabilitation intervention produced clinically significant changes in gait, that were associated with QoL.
