Workshop Objectives: 1) Outline the HSRandD State of the Art (SOTA) Conference format and purpose; 2) Review the Policy and Research Recommendations from the September 2010 SOTA Conference on Access to VA Care; 3) Engage the audience in how the Policy Recommendations can potentially be implemented, including barriers and facilitators to such policy changes; 4) Review research on access to care and how the Recommendations can be incorporated into existing and future research portfolios. Activities: The presenters will combine didactic methods with facilitated discussion to provide adequate background and depth of the topic, but also engage the audience to take advantage of their expertise. In addition to covering the Policy and Research Recommendations from the SOTA, the presenters will provide an overview of a recently published Access Supplement to the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Target Audience: This presentation will target researchers, clinicians, and VA administrative leaders in VA and engage them regarding the implications of the SOTA recommendations. Although the SOTA process included many potential VA and non-VA stakeholders and experts in the area of access, there still remain potential limitations in the findings and how to implement them. Using the audience to further discuss and dissect these recommendations will provide insight for the audience and the presenters on how to move the science and applications of the findings forward. Assumed Audience Familiarity with Topic: The audience will have considerable variability in their understanding of the topic. The presenters will include adequate background for more novice attendees, but go into enough depth for the more advanced attendees and engage the audience.
