Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a multi-component palliative care intervention to improve processes of end-of-life care in VA Medical Centers. Design: Multi-center, pre-post intervention trial conducted July 1, 2005 - March 31, 2012 in 6 VA Medical Centers in southeast USA. Introduction of the intervention was staggered across time at 6-month intervals using a multiple baseline design. Intervention: Multi-component intervention. Based on the best practices of home hospice. designed to improve the quality of care for patients dying in inpatient settings. Targeted to hospital providers, including physician, nursing, and ancillary staff. Purpose: to train hospital staff to identify patients who were actively dying and to implement the best practices of home-based hospice care in the inpatient setting.
