In this article, the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and cognitive impairment in persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and the impact of these psychological and cognitive factors on clinical outcomes in COPD is reviewed. Methods for screening and identification of these conditions in COPD are described. The extent to which depression, anxiety or cognitive impairment limit or modify the effectiveness of pulmonary rehabilitation, and whether pulmonary rehabilitation may ameliorate these psychological and cognitive impairments are discussed.
