Abstract: This paper presents results from a series of interviews with patients in cardiology clinics within a Veteran's Health Administration hospital. The Veteran patients were between 18 and 80 years old and had been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. Participants completed semi-structured interviews in which they described their history of atrial fibrillation and their experience of discussing treatment options with their physician. Participants were also shown a paper mock-up of a shared decision-making support tool called "Veterans Like Me". The tool, which is under development, uses data from the electronic health Record to show the treatment outcomes and side effects that individuals (similar to the user in age and comorbidity profiles) have experienced. Participants learned how they will be able to use the tool to assist them in participating with their physician in making therapeutic decisions.
