Abstract:

Focus groups were conducted with groups of persons with SCI and VA SCI health care providers at five VA SCI Centers. The purpose of the focus groups was to identify knowledge gaps in SCI care and management of importance to SCI consumers and providers and how this information can be used to delineate a research agenda to advance the field of SCI research. Four broad categories of concern were identified: prevention/management of secondary disabilities and comorbidities; assistive technology and equipment; community-based care; and quality of life issues. Based on these concerns, a number of potential research questions were identified. The Veterans Health Administration is taking significant strides to identify knowledge gaps and initiate quality improvement efforts in SCI.
