Substance Use Disorders, Risky Substance Use and Brain Injury

Description: Even though as many as half of all people treated for substance use disorders (SUD) will have had at least one brain injury sometime in their life, this condition is poorly understood among professionals in behavioral health programs. This gap in awareness exists despite evidence that a history of brain injury significantly reduces the success of SUD disorder treatment. This presentation will describe information professionals treating persons with co-occurring SUD and brain injury should know in order to increase the effectiveness of services provided. Topics will include the prevalence of traumatic and other acquired brain injuries among persons who engage in at-risk substance use, how the fingerprint of these brain injuries is central to problems self-regulating behavior, and other ways that the effects of brain injury can impact treatment. The presentation is appropriate for behavioral health professionals as well as rehabilitation specialists who treat persons with co-occurring brain injury and at-risk use or SUD.
