Description: The “Stay Strong” randomized trial compares use of a Fitbit device alone versus the addition of phone-based lifestyle coaching, personalized weekly physical activity goals, and messaging. This project was initially approved for funding in 2013, completed the “Just-in-Time” process in 2015, and recently launched in the fall of 2017. The “story” of obtaining regulatory approvals (including IRB, Information Security, and Privacy) to use a consumer wearable device, a data collection service, and smartphone app will be used to highlight lessons learned and recommendations for the field. Joe Holston is the former Senior Research ISO and is currently a Program Analyst in ORD concentrating on issues of the use of technology in VA research. Laura will describe her team’s experiences with launching Stay Strong with lessons learned and Joe will extend those insights to more general recommendations based on latest guidance from VA Central Office. Intended Audience: Researchers interested in conducting technology-mediated research in VA.
