Description: In today’s health care environment, a safe interpersonal environment is critical for creating value and getting the work done. Psychological safety – a climate in which candor is valued and enabled – frees up people to engage in learning and innovation because they do not have to be occupied by impression management or face saving. There is no tradeoff between psychological safety and high standards – and leaders are responsible for creating an environment where both are emphasized. Intended audience: HSR&D and QUERI researchers, as well as clinicians, policy makers, healthcare leadership, and all others interested in learning organizations and innovation.
