Description: Veterans who served in a conflict zone while in the military may be exposed to physically and psychologically traumatic events that impact the nervous system and increase the risk for clinical conditions. Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a common occurrence in Veterans and psychiatric indications such as symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in combat Veterans; however, the neural mechanisms underlying these conditions remain unknown. We describe here recent neuroimaging studies in the TRACTS study at VA Boston aiming to better understand how mTBI and PTSD are related to structural and functional indicators of brain health.
