Getting Started with Congressionally Mandated Implementation and Evaluation Projects

by David Adkins, MHA, ACHE ; Monica Matthieu, PhD, LCSW
Seminar date: 6/1/2023

Description: As we focus on making a real-world impact with routinization of evidence-based care, more of us are being asked to work on congressionally mandated implementation and evaluation projects. It can be difficult to know where and how to start. The presenters will provide an overview of how to get started working on congressionally mandated implementation and evaluation projects based on their experiences working on several congressionally mandated projects. Helpful tips and tools to be covered include how to find legislation, scoping out a project, and lessons learned about the process from negotiation of the project to building evaluation plans, and logic models. The presenters will give applied examples from the MISSION Act Peers in PACT and SSG Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program. They will review how a bill becomes a law, how to find it, how to read it, how to think about it and Pro-tips –for Congressionally Mandated Projects, Evaluations, and Reports including:
- How to prepare an Executive Summary
- How to prepare a Policy Brief
- How to prepare an Evaluation Design
- How to prepare an Implementation Plan/Proposal
- How to prepare a Congressionally Mandated Report

Intended Audience: HSR&D/QUERI investigators with an interest in relevance of legislation to VA
