Description: This session provides an overview of regulations governing access and use of VA data for research and operations uses, and the resulting differences between accessing VA data for operations and using it for research. The presenter examines typical requirements applied by VA data stewards for requesting data access, and the best sources for step-by-step instructions specific to commonly used data sources. New data users may reference Meet VIReC: The Researcher's Guide to VA Data and Navigating VA Data Sources: An Overview of Commonly Used Databases prior to attending this session.
Objectives:
• Explain the difference between VA research, preparatory to research, and operations projects
• Detail regulatory requirements for accessing and using VA data for all types of projects
• Explain who stewards the data and how to request access for common data sources
