HSR&D Investigators Honored At AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting

VA's Health Services Research & Development Service (HSR&D) was well-represented among both the award recipients and presenters at the AcademyHealth 2012 Annual Research Meeting, held June 24-26.

Alice S. Hersh New Investigator Award

Hardeep Singh, M.D., M.P.H., Chief of the Health Policy and Quality Program at the VA HSR&D's Houston Center for Quality of Care and Utilization Studies, received the Alice S. Hersh New Investigator Award at the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting on June 25, 2012.

In addition to his role with the HSR&D Houston Center of Excellence, Dr. Singh is the Director of the Houston VA Patient Safety Center of Inquiry, and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Baylor College. His research interests include understanding and reducing diagnostic errors in the ambulatory care setting, (especially those that involve missed and delayed cancer diagnosis); and using health information technology to identify and reduce diagnostic errors. Dr. Singh is a nationally recognized expert in improving patient safety through the use of electronic medical records, and has published extensively on that subject.

The Alice S. Hersh award, presented annually, recognizes those scholars who early in their careers as health services researchers show exceptional promise for future contributions.

Carol Weisman and Gary Chase Gender Based Research Award

VA researchers Michelle Mengeling, Ph.D., M.S., B.A., and Kristina Cordasco, M.D., M.P.H., M.S.H.S., have been named recipients of the Carol Weisman and Gary Chase Gender Based Research Award.

Dr. Mengeling, Affiliate Investigator with the Center for Comprehensive Access and Delivery Research and Evaluation in Iowa City, IA, was awarded the 2012 Best Abstract for "Reporting In-military Sexual Assault and Current Mental Health of OEF/OIF Active Component, Reserve, and National Guard Servicewomen". Dr. Cordasco, Associate Investigator with the Center for the Study of Health Care Provider Behavior in Los Angeles, CA, was awarded 2012 Best Abstract Honorable Mention for "The 2011 VHA Emergency Services for Women (ESW) Survey."

The Weisman/Chase Award is newly-established in 2012, and honors the individual and joint life Carol Weisman and Gary Chase, health services researchers who charted the frontier of gender-based research and health policy. Awardees are selected from among the abstracts submitted to the Gender-Based Research Interest Group as part of AcademyHealth's annual research meeting, and there are three awardees: Best Abstract, Best Poster, and Best Abstract Honorable Mention.

Among the 20 abstracts selected as "Outstanding Research Abstracts" was "Duplicate Federal Expenditures for Dual Enrollees in Medicare Advantage Plans and the Veterans Affairs Health Care System", by Amal Trivedi, M.D., M.P.H., Research Career Development Awardee and a Research Investigator at the Providence VA Medical Center's Center for Systems, Outcomes and Quality in Chronic Disease & Rehabilitation. This work was published in JAMA as an Epub ahead of print on June 26, 2012. Dr. Trivedi is also an Assistant Professor of Community Health at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
