Jill Bormann, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., to Receive Secretary's Award for Excellence in Nursing

The Office of the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the 2014 recipients of the Secretary's Award for Excellence in Nursing and for the Advancement of Nursing Programs. Among the recipients is VA Health Services Research & Development (HSR&D) investigator Jill Bormann, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., of the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Dr. Bormann will receive the award in the category of "Registered Nurse in an Expanded Role."

Dr. Bormann is Associate Nurse Executive and Research and Clinical Nurse Specialist in Adult Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at San Diego State University School of Nursing. Dr. Bormann's research interests include Veterans with chronic illness and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), family caregivers of Veterans with dementia, adults with HIV, women of childbearingage, and healthcare employees. In 2001, Dr. Bormann pioneered a program of research on health-related outcomes of the Mantram Repetition Program (MRP), a spiritually-integrated intervention for the management of symptoms related to severe and trauma-related stress. Results from a VA HSR&D-funded study based on that work showed that an intervention of MRP, in conjunction with standard treatment, could reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder. Study results were published in the journal Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice, and Policy.

The Secretary's Award for Excellence in Nursing and for the Advancement of Nursing Programs is given to individuals who have been nominated by their colleagues for outstanding service to Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Recipients have displayed the best characteristics and the highest level of dedication to their profession. Nominees are chosen from individual VA medical centers, and go through a rigorous review before the final selection is made.
