HSR&D Investigators Honored at AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting

HSR&D's Werner Receives Alice Hersh New Investigator Award

HSR&D investigator Rachel Werner, MD, PhD, a Research Career Development Awardee with the VA HSR&D Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion (CHERP) and a primary care internist at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Philadelphia, has received the Alice S. Hersh New Investigator Award at the AcademyHealth Annual Research Meeting on June 28, 2009. This prestigious award recognizes scholars early in their careers as health services researchers who show exceptional promise for future contributions.

Dr. Werner's research focuses on how quality improvement initiatives—such as pay for performance and public reporting—change health care delivery, health care organization and finances, racial disparities, and overall quality of care. Her work was among the first to recognize that public reporting of quality information may in some cases, worsen racial disparities in care.

Dr. Werner's work has been recognized through numerous awards including the Dissertation Award from AcademyHealth, the John D. Thompson Prize for Young Investigators from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and Article of the Year Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine for her JAMA article on the relationship between measured performance and mortality rates in hospitals.

In her acceptance remarks, Dr. Werner thanked the VA for their ongoing support of her work.


HSR&D Investigator Amal Trivedi Receives AcademyHealth Article of the Year Award

HSR&D investigator Amal Trivedi, MD, MPH, a Research Career Development Awardee with the Center for Systems, Outcomes and Quality in Chronic Disease & Rehabilitation (SOQCR) at the Department of Veterans Affairs in Providence, has received the AcademyHealth Article of the Year Award for 2009.

The award recognizes the best scientific work that the fields of health services research and health policy have produced and published during the previous calendar year. The award-winning article provides new insights into the delivery of health care and advances knowledge of the field. Dr. Trivedi's article, "Insurance Parity and the Use of Outpatient Mental Health Care Following a Psychiatric Hospitalization", appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Dr. Trivedi was also honored with a Best Abstract award for his study, "Unintended Consequences of Increased Ambulatory Copayments on Hospital Use in the Elderly".

HSR&D Investigator Elizabeth Yano, PhD, MSPH, Awarded Best Abstract at AcademyHealth 2009

HSR&D investigator Elizabeth Yano's work on the impact of practice structure on the quality of care for women veterans was named Best Abstract at the 2009 AcademyHealth Annual Research meeting. The award was announced during a special session presentation on Tuesday, June 30.

The abstract, "Impact of Practice Structure on the Quality of Care for Women Veterans", discusses the first attempt to systematically evaluate the quality of care for women veterans in VA settings, filling a crucial gap in VHA's ability to reduce gender disparities and arm VHA care managers with an evidence base for adapting care arrangements that optimize the outcomes and satisfaction of women veterans.

During her acceptance remarks, Dr. Yano thanked the VA for their unflagging support of her ongoing work with women veterans and quality improvements to women's health practice structure and provider services.
