Dr. Sussman is an Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan and a Core Investigator for the Ann Arbor VA Health Services Research and Development Center for Clinical Management Research (HSR&D CCMR). He is a former RWJF Clinical Scholar. His research includes first-authored publications in Circulation and the BMJ, along with many others. His primary research interests are in improving the personal tailoring of medical decisions, especially using policy incentives. He is especially interested in how risk prediction, implementation science, and policy can make care more personalized and patient-centered. His work uses risk prediction and decision analysis to determine which patients will benefit from established treatments, with the goals of making treatments more efficient and patient-centered and implementation science and policy to understand how to achieve these goals. He is the recipient of a VA Career Development Award that focuses on improving cardiovascular prevention by understanding and addressing the barriers and facilitators to risk-based use of preventive medicines, with a focus on how VA policy can improve these decisions and a VA investigator-initiated research grant on improving quality measurement in cardiovascular disease with weighted measures. His clinical interest is in prevention of cardiovascular disease and the complications of diabetes. He is a practicing primary care physician.
