Joseph Simonetti is a physician and health services researcher at the VA Rocky Mountain Regional Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Simonetti's research focuses on the development and testing of novel, patient-centered firearm injury prevention interventions, with a specific focus on suicide prevention. His educational and operational work focuses on facilitating the delivery of patient-centered firearm safety interventions by providing clinicians with information and communication skills necessary to deliver them in a manner that aligns with the needs and values of firearm owners.

His Career Development Award uses mixed methods to explore the needs of Veterans and VHA staff in the development of a firearm and medication safety intervention. This intervention will be developed and pilot tested among Veterans with elevated suicide risk who receive care in VHA Emergency Departments.

Dr. Simonetti received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine, completed residency and chief residency at the University of Pittsburgh, and an NRSA research fellowship at the University of Washington and VA Puget Sound, and received a master of public health degree from the University of Washington School of Public Health.
