Dr. Makris is a clinical investigator and rheumatologist at the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in the VA North Texas Health Care System. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Division of Rheumatic Diseases at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Makris completed her Internal Medicine training at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA and a Rheumatology fellowship followed by a Geriatrics T32 postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology in Aging Research at Yale University, New Haven, CT.
Dr. Makris' research focuses on the intersection of chronic degenerative musculoskeletal conditions, aging (with emphasis on mental health comorbid conditions), and behavioral activation. She is developing and evaluating a novel telephone-delivered behavioral intervention to improve outcomes most relevant to older Veterans with chronic back pain and comorbid depression. The behavioral intervention developed in her CDA-2 will focus on how older Veterans are uniquely motivated to make behavioral change; she will use principles from motivational interviewing and value-driven, goal-oriented care.
