To build on the successes of VA's Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) Centers of Excellence (COEs) and Research Enhancement Award Programs (REAPs), HSR&D has developed the new Centers of Innovation (COINs). Beginning on October 1, 2013, new COINs will replace the current COEs and REAPs.
COINs will reward research innovations and partnerships to ensure that research has the greatest possible impact on VHA policies, healthcare practices, and health outcomes for Veterans. A unique feature of the COINs is that they will include one or more focused areas of research that address questions of significance to VHA clinical and operational partners, and these partners will be engaged in the research activities of the COINs. A total of 19 COINs have been funded for up to five years. All 14 of the current COEs and 8 of the REAPs will become either single or multi-site COINs. More information about the COINs, including their special research areas, will be posted closer to their inauguration date.
