In a foreword for this Special Issue, Carolyn Clancy, MD, VA’s Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Discovery, Education and Affiliate Networks, writes about VA’s electronic health record system and its “critical transition from a largely home-grown system to a widely used commercial product…” that “holds enormous promise for Veterans’ care and is deeply rooted in our mission to provide timely, safe, high-quality healthcare to the men and women who serve this nation. The special VA issue of the International Biometrics Society’s Biostatistics and Epidemiology, titled “U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Panel on Statistics and Analytics on Healthcare Datasets: Challenges and Recommended Strategies,” includes 11 papers that resulted from deliberations of an HSR&D-funded panel on Statistics and Analytics on VHA Datasets.
